Growing Together: Volunteering and Sustainability at FCTG: Insights from Samantha’s Journey

Written by FCTG Careers | Apr 21, 2025 2:00:00 PM

In today’s world, sustainability is more than just a buzzword; it’s a way of life that can significantly impact our environment and communities. Samantha Buckley, a Talent Acquisition Specialist at Flight Centre Travel Group, has been a shining example of how small, meaningful changes can lead to a more sustainable future. Let’s dive into her journey and the valuable lessons she’s learned along the way.

Continuing the Sustainability Journey

Samantha is committed to deepening her understanding of environmental sustainability. She plans to engage with local environmental organizations to raise awareness in her community. “I want to be more mindful of my purchasing habits,” she says. Her dedication extends to volunteering at Rock Steady Farm and participating in composting efforts at her workplace, thanks to a colleague’s advocacy for a compost bin. Rock Steady Farm where Samantha recently volunteered, was founded in 2015, and they manage a total of 12 acres in Millerton, NY. In addition to their holistic, sustainable farming and land stewardship practices, they increase equity in the food system through food access in the Hudson Valley and NYC, and affirming training and support to enable queer, trans, Black, Indigenous and people of color (QTBIPOC) farmers to thrive. Rock Steady Farm's work is grounded in close community partnerships with food pantries, mutual aid projects, peer farms, advocacy organizations and local and regional networks.

Small Changes, Big Impact

One of the most impactful lessons Samantha shares is the power of small changes. “One small change everyone can make to support sustainability would be to use your reusable water bottle instead of buying a bottle of water, or to use reusable utensils instead of using plastic utensils that are going to be thrown in the garbage immediately,” she advises. These seemingly minor adjustments can collectively make a significant difference in reducing waste.

Inspired by Rock Steady Farm

Volunteering at Rock Steady Farm was a transformative experience for Samantha. She started a compost at home, which has helped her become more mindful of food waste. “It was insightful for me to recognize how much these farms benefit the environment and the community,” she reflects. Supporting local farms by shopping at farmer’s markets not only reduces food waste but also supports local agriculture and ensures access to seasonal produce.

Sustainable Habits and Community Engagement

Samantha’s experience at Rock Steady Farm has inspired her to adopt more sustainable habits in her daily life. She plans to use reusable containers instead of plastic wrap or bags and support local farmer’s markets. “My message to my FCTG colleagues about the importance of getting involved in sustainability is that it is very easy and requires minimal effort,” she emphasizes. Small changes can lead to significant impacts, contributing to a more sustainable environment and community.

The Importance of Local Farms

Supporting local farms like Rock Steady is crucial for environmental sustainability and food equity. “When you support local farms like Rock Steady, you are encouraging close community partnerships and advocating for the protection of the land and its natural resources,” Samantha explains. These farms often distribute a significant portion of their produce to community organizations and food pantries, promoting food equity and sustainability.

Memorable Moments and Lasting Impact

One of the standout moments for Samantha was working alongside the warm and inclusive community at Rock Steady Farm. “Everyone that worked at Rock Steady Farm was lovely. They were all incredibly inviting and warm and inclusive,” she recalls. The experience deepened her understanding of sustainable farming practices, such as crop rotation and cover cropping, which are essential for maintaining soil health and minimizing environmental impact.
