You know you’re ready for a change, but have no idea where to start. When it comes to change, we are often our own biggest obstacle, so follow these tips to get out of your own way and make your career change a success!
Begin with asking yourself what you like and dislike about your current job, and why you’re wanting a career change. Are you running away from a particular person or problem? Or have your career goals and interests changed, prompting you to take a positive step towards better job opportunities that align more closely with your values and passions? Taking some time to figure out what makes you happy and what might challenge you in a new role is a huge step in setting yourself up for career satisfaction in the future.
The job market is continually evolving, offering career opportunities that may not have existed when you first started out. Do some research into different industries that centre around your interests and speak to people working in the careers you’re curious about. Find out what kind of jobs are available and which directions your new career path could lead. For example, a passion for travel could see you starting a new career as a Travel Agent, Flight Attendant or Tour Leader!
You may already have some experience relevant to your new career, but what other skills do you need to develop? Once you have a clearer idea of the new job opportunities you’d like to pursue, take some time to address any gaps in your qualifications by bringing your skills up to date with additional training, so you can put your best foot forward at an interview.
Making a big change may seem overwhelming at first, but long gone are the days of working the same job your entire life, only to collect your gold watch at retirement on your way out the door. Times have changed, and so can your career. Good luck!
