Turning a Passion for Travel Into a Successful Career

Turning a Passion for Travel Into a Successful Career

Ever wondered how a passion for travel translates to a career path? We talked to Jack Stickley about what it’s like working at Flight Centre and his advice for people looking to start a career in travel.

Hi Jack, what would you say is different about working in the travel industry?

What I’ve noticed over the years is that people who work in travel have a passion for it too. It makes the work environment feel more adventurous and adds a fun element to the industry. What I love is that we have a very “work hard, play hard” attitude, and everyone is a little crazy!

Where do you see yourself going in your career?

Currently, I work as a Commercial Analyst, and my role is to understand the revenue and cost drivers of the business to ensure that we are achieving long-term profitability. The projects I work on are aimed at providing valuable insights into areas of opportunity Flight Centre, including wage modelling, developing pricing strategies and ad-hoc reporting.

I feel so lucky to work in the travel industry, as travel is something that I’ve always been passionate about. Ideally, I would love to stay in Flight Centre and become CFO of a company one day!

What advice would you give someone looking to start their career?

Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty! Throw yourself at every possible opportunity and ask for help when you’re unsure.

Throughout my career, I’ve found soft skills to be very important. Not everyone knows the ins and outs of your job, but they will remember their interactions with you. That’s why you should always present the best version of yourself at work and build your professional networks.

It’s also important to work somewhere that is committed to your personal growth. A lot of my friends who work in consultancies either stay for a short period or wait until they’re able to move on to another company. This is not the case at Flight Centre. Our people are treated as more than just numbers or employees.

I love working at Flight Centre because the company is committed to helping me reach my career goals. They offer you endless opportunities to grow if you work hard and are willing to put yourself out there. I am yet to find a leader in our company who isn’t fully committed to helping you get to the next stage of your career.
